Mauritanian authorities announce the arrest of 123 people during protests and riots


The Mauritanian authorities arrested 123 people during protests that witnessed riots in the city of Arkez in the south of the country, according to the Sahara Media website, citing an informed source.


The commander of the Mauritanian National Gendarmerie, Abdallah Ould Ahmed Aisha, visited the city of Arkez at dawn on Sunday to see the progress of the ongoing investigations after the hot events in the city.


On Wednesday, many Erkiz residents protested the frequent power cuts and poor services in the city.


These protests included riots that affected an electricity company, a civil status center and the city's mayor's house.
