The outcome of a controversial manual review of the results of the 2020 US presidential election in Arizona's largest county has come close to previously reported official figures, according to a draft of a report expected to be delivered later today, Politico magazine said.
The tally of the review, which was endorsed by the Republican-controlled state Senate but had no bearing on Biden's official victory in the state, found that Biden defeated Trump Maricopa County by 45,000 votes, a slight increase for Biden's margin over the official count.
Politico said the Arizona review played a key role in Trump's claims that he won the 2020 election.
According to the magazine, county officials in Mariokoba, whose board of supervisors is controlled by Republicans, and whose top election official is also a Republican, celebrated the draft report because it validated their election results. “There is no need to dig into the draft version of the Arizona Senate scrutiny report to confirm what I already knew,” House Speaker Jack Sellers, Republican, said in a statement.
He added that this meant that the sorting equipment stuck the papers in the way they were designed, and that the results reflected the will of the voters, and that should be the end of the story.
Politico says it has reviewed copies of the draft report circulated by the Maricopa County Registry and the Arizona Secretary of State's office, both of which were opposed to a state recount.
