The United States affirms its keenness to continue supporting Sudan, provided that it commits to the transition to civilian rule

The United States affirmed its keenness to maintain political and economic support for Sudan, provided that it is committed to the transition to civilian rule.

This came, according to what the US State Department reported in a statement published on its website, today, Sunday, during the visit of the US envoy to the Horn of Africa, Jeffrey Feltman, to Sudan, and his meeting with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the civilian Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, among other political leaders.

Feltman emphasized that continued US support depends on Sudan's commitment to the agreed transitional regime as stipulated in the 2019 Constitutional Declaration and the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement.

The statement said that Feltman urged Sudanese politicians to make rapid progress towards civilian rule, including reaching consensus on the date on which a civilian would assume the presidency of the Sovereignty Council.

The US State Department added that deviation from this path and failure to meet the main criteria would jeopardize Sudan's bilateral relationship with the United States, including the large US aid.

The Special Envoy encouraged the Council of Ministers, the Sovereignty Council, the Forces of Freedom and Change and other stakeholders to assume their responsibilities at this historic moment and reassure the Sudanese people that the aspirations of the revolution will be fulfilled to avoid the brinkmanship and mutual accusations.

He also urged the leaders to make rapid progress on key parameters in the constitutional declaration that would bring stability to the transitional period.

According to the statement, Special Envoy Feltman sincerely thanked Prime Minister Hamdok, in his capacity as Chair of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), for his commitment to promoting a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ethiopia, and they agreed on the urgency of achieving a negotiated ceasefire while ensuring humanitarian access. Unhindered to all who suffer.

It is noteworthy that the US envoy to the Horn of Africa visited Sudan from September 28 to October 1 to highlight the United States' unwavering commitment to Sudan's continued political transition, which represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to achieve democracy.
